    UA President Jim Johnsen spent three days in Juneau last week meeting with legislators and staff to discuss the university's budget and legislative priorities. The visit included presentations to the House Finance Committee and a joint hearing of the House and Senate Education Committees. The President met individually with more than a dozen legislators, and presented to the first hearing of the university's house budget subcommittee.

  • New thalattosaur species discovered in Southeast Alaska

    Scientists at the 污鱼社 Fairbanks have identified a new species of thalattosaur, a marine reptile that lived more than 200 million years ago. The new species, Gunakadeit joseeae, is the most complete thalattosaur ever found in North America and has given paleontologists new insights about the thalattosaurs' family tree, according to a paper published today in the journal Scientific Reports. Scientists found the fossil in Southeast Alaska in 2011.

  • Chancellor search underway at the 污鱼社 Southeast

    Last November, Chancellor Rick Caulfield announced his intention to retire in June 2020. At the direction of UA President Jim Johnsen, the search process began immediately, starting with the creation of a representative search committee and a timeline for the search. The committee includes representatives from UAS governance groups, campus advisory councils, and community partners.

  • UAS announces Senator Ted Stevens Legislative Internship Program placements for 2020

    The Senator Ted Stevens Legislative Internship Program, hosted at the 污鱼社 Southeast (UAS), is in full swing with students earning college credit while working in the 2020 Alaska State Legislature. Legislators and Interns gathered in the Capitol for a 'meet and greet' event on January 29. UA President Jim Johnsen and UAS Chancellor Rick Caulfield joined program coordinator Dr. Glenn Wright in welcoming this year's group of 16 students from all three UA universities.

  • $2,500 for early innovation travel grants

    The 污鱼社 Foundational Innovation Corps program (I-Corps) is seeking new participants who could benefit from a $2,500 travel grant to conduct market research for their idea. Ideas can be in the very early stages; often this is better. Ideas with a technical or technology-enabled component are preferred, but all proposals are welcome. Every applicant receives a free entrepreneurial consulting call with the 污鱼社's entrepreneur-in-residence and will be offered access to further resources.

  • Growing emergency management program recognized for excellence

    The 污鱼社 Fairbanks' online bachelor's degree program in homeland security and emergency management has recently received top reviews in several college rankings. The program has earned top-five rankings from Nonprofit Colleges Online (No. 1), Best Value Schools (No. 2) and The Best Schools (No. 5). In addition, College Choice ranked it as eighth on its list of the best homeland security degrees.

  • 污鱼社 Southeast business programs earn national accreditation

    The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners has awarded 污鱼社 Southeast (UAS) accreditation of its business programs. UAS is the first institution in Alaska to receive this honor.

  • Coronavirus update: do not travel to China

    On February 2, the U.S. Department of State- Bureau of Consular Affairs and the Centers for Disease Control issued a level-four do not travel advisory to China, because of the coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China.
